✓ Pros
Tightest MT5 EUR/USD spread in our test group
38ms average execution — excellent for scalping
Free VPS hosting reduces EA latency
ASIC-regulated with segregated client funds
✗ Cons
A$3/side commission on Raw account
A$200 minimum deposit
Interface less beginner-friendly than Eightcap

KolaTrading Verdict: IC Markets recorded the tightest MT5 spreads of the group. The Raw account EUR/USD averaged 0.10 pips across all sessions, with a 38ms average execution — the fastest figure we logged on MT5.

If your priority is raw cost per trade and execution speed, IC Markets edges Pepperstone. The trade-off is a slightly more technical interface aimed at experienced traders.

Ideal for cost-focused and high-frequency MT5 traders. Compare the raw pricing in our IC Markets vs FP Markets page.

✗ Cons

Spreads slightly wider than IC Markets and Pepperstone
Smaller instrument range than the top two

KolaTrading Verdict: Vantage is the best-value MT5 entry point we tested. The A$50 minimum on the Raw account is the lowest of the group, and the 0.15 pip EUR/USD average is genuinely competitive for that price tier.

Execution at 44ms was a touch slower than the top two but reliable throughout our test. The MT5 mobile app stood out as one of the cleaner builds we used.

Best for traders who want true Raw ECN pricing on MT5 without a large opening balance. Read the detail in our Vantage Markets review.

Smaller research and analysis suite

KolaTrading Verdict: Eightcap is the easiest MT5 broker to get started with. Our account was verified and funded in under 24 hours, and the simplified setup makes it a sensible first MT5 account.

The 0.16 pip EUR/USD average is the widest of the group, but it remains reasonable for a broker pitched at newer traders. Execution at 47ms was consistent across sessions.

Best for traders opening their first MT5 account who value a smooth start over the absolute tightest spread. Full detail in our Eightcap review.

How We Actually Tested These MT5 Brokers

Most broker review sites describe a methodology in abstract terms. Below is the actual process we used for our June 2026 MT5 testing round, including what we found that surprised us.

The Setup

In June 2026 we deposited A$500 into live accounts at four ASIC-regulated brokers and installed the MetaTrader 5 terminal on each. Every account was funded via bank transfer or card — the same methods a retail trader would use. We did not accept demo credits or sponsored accounts.

What We Traded

We placed a minimum of 30 live trades per broker on MT5 across EUR/USD, AUD/USD and XAU/USD gold. Trades were entered at three times: 10:00–11:00 AEST (ASX open), 17:00–18:00 AEST (London overlap) and 23:00–00:00 AEST (US session peak), so we could compare spread behaviour across sessions.

The Multi-Asset Test

MT5’s main advantage over MT4 is broader asset coverage. We confirmed each broker’s MT5 build offered forex, indices and commodities, and checked that depth-of-market and the integrated economic calendar worked as intended.

What We Recorded

For every trade we logged the quoted spread at entry, the fill price versus mid-price (real slippage), and the time from order submission to execution confirmation. We also processed one full withdrawal cycle per broker to measure time and fees.

A Finding Worth Flagging

IC Markets recorded the tightest MT5 spreads, but Pepperstone’s build felt the most stable under load during the US session peak. There is a genuine trade-off between absolute spread and overall platform polish — worth weighing against your own priorities.

What is MetaTrader 5 (MT5)?

MetaTrader 5 is the successor to MT4, released in 2010. It keeps the familiar MetaTrader workflow but adds more timeframes, more order types, an integrated economic calendar, depth-of-market data and the ability to trade a wider range of asset classes from a single terminal.

In Australia, most ASIC-regulated brokers offer MT5 alongside MT4. It has become the default choice for traders who want indices, commodities and forex in one place, with more advanced analytical tools built in.

Why Choose MT5 Over MT4?

  • More timeframes — 21 chart timeframes versus 9 in MT4
  • More order types — Including buy-stop-limit and sell-stop-limit
  • Built-in economic calendar — News events overlaid directly on charts
  • Depth of market — Visible order-book pricing on supported instruments
  • Broader assets — Designed for multi-asset trading from one platform

If you’re deciding between the two, our MT4 vs MT5 guide walks through the differences in full.

Can You Run Expert Advisors on MT5?

Yes. MT5 supports automated trading through EAs written in the MQL5 language. The MQL5 library is smaller than MT4’s MQL4 ecosystem, but it is growing, and MT5’s faster strategy tester is an advantage for backtesting. Pepperstone and IC Markets offer free VPS hosting for qualifying balances to keep EAs running with low latency.

Is MT5 Trading Legal in Australia?

Yes. MT5 is just a platform — what matters is the broker behind it. As long as your MT5 broker holds a valid ASIC AFSL, you have segregated client funds, negative balance protection and access to AFCA. Always verify the licence at the ASIC Connect register before depositing.

How to Choose an MT5 Broker in Australia

1. Confirm ASIC Regulation First

Only trade with a broker that holds a valid AFSL. This ensures segregated client funds, negative balance protection and access to AFCA for disputes. All four brokers on this page are ASIC-regulated. Verify any licence directly at the ASIC Connect register before depositing.

2. Compare Spread and Commission Together

A tight raw spread means little if the commission is high. Our testing recorded IC Markets at 0.10 pips plus A$3/side and Pepperstone at 0.13 pips plus A$3.5/side. Always add the commission to the spread to get your true cost per trade.

3. Check the Multi-Asset Range

MT5’s strength is trading forex, indices and commodities from one terminal. If you only trade a single asset class, MT4 may serve you equally well. If you want everything in one platform, confirm the broker’s MT5 build actually carries the instruments you need.

4. Understand the Full Cost Structure

  • Spread — The difference between buy and sell price; your primary recurring cost
  • Commission — Raw/ECN accounts charge a per-side commission on top of the spread
  • Overnight swap — Charged on positions held past market close
  • VPS fees — Free at IC Markets and Pepperstone for qualifying balances; otherwise a monthly cost

5. Know ASIC’s Leverage Limits

ASIC caps CFD leverage for Australian retail traders: major forex 30:1, minor forex and gold 20:1, major indices 20:1, other commodities 10:1, individual shares 5:1, crypto 2:1. These limits apply on every platform, including MT5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MT5 better than MT4 in 2026?

It depends on how you trade. MT5 offers more timeframes, more order types, depth-of-market and broader multi-asset coverage, making it better for traders who want indices, commodities and forex in one terminal. MT4 still has the larger EA library. For multi-asset trading, MT5 is generally the stronger choice in 2026.

Which MT5 broker has the lowest spreads in Australia?

In our June 2026 live testing, IC Markets Raw recorded a 0.10 pip average EUR/USD spread on MT5 — the tightest in our test group — followed by Pepperstone at 0.13 pips and Vantage at 0.15 pips. Remember to add the per-side commission to compare true cost.

Are all the MT5 brokers in this list ASIC regulated?

Yes. Pepperstone (AFSL 414530), IC Markets (AFSL 335692), Vantage Markets (AFSL 428901) and Eightcap (AFSL 391441) all hold a valid ASIC Australian Financial Services Licence, with segregated client funds and AFCA access.

Can I run Expert Advisors on MT5?

Yes. MT5 supports EAs written in MQL5 and includes a faster, more capable strategy tester for backtesting. The MQL5 library is smaller than MT4’s, but it is growing. Pepperstone and IC Markets offer free VPS hosting for qualifying balances to keep EAs running with low latency.

Can I use the same EA on both MT4 and MT5?

No. MT4 EAs are written in MQL4 and MT5 EAs in MQL5 — the two languages are not directly compatible. An EA built for MT4 must be rewritten or recompiled for MT5. If you depend on a specific MT4-only EA, check our Best MT4 Brokers page instead.
