ASX Market Hours: Trading Times for the Australian Securities Exchange

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) operates during specific hours each business day, with distinct trading phases that determine when investors can buy and sell securities.

Standard Trading Hours

The ASX operates on Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) or Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) depending on the season:

  • Pre-Market Open: 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM AEST/AEDT
  • Normal Trading: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM AEST/AEDT
  • Closing Single Price Auction: 4:00 PM – 4:10 PM AEST/AEDT
  • Adjust Phase: 4:10 PM – 4:11 PM AEST/AEDT

Trading Phases Explained

Pre-Market Open (7:00 AM – 10:00 AM)

During the pre-market phase, orders can be entered, modified, or cancelled, but no trades are executed. This period allows market participants to position themselves before the market opens. Orders accumulate and are matched at the opening auction at 10:00 AM.

Normal Trading (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

This is the primary trading session where continuous matching of buy and sell orders occurs. The majority of daily trading volume takes place during these six hours. Prices move in real-time based on supply and demand.

Closing Single Price Auction (4:00 PM – 4:10 PM)

During this phase, orders can be entered but trades don’t execute until 4:10 PM when the closing auction determines the official closing price for each security. This mechanism helps establish a fair closing price and reduces volatility at market close.

Adjust Phase (4:10 PM – 4:11 PM)

A brief adjustment period following the closing auction where final adjustments are made to ensure all closing auction trades are properly recorded.

Market Holidays

The ASX is closed on Australian public holidays including New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Queen’s Birthday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. When a public holiday falls on a weekend, the market typically closes on the following Monday.

International Time Differences

For international investors, ASX trading hours overlap partially with Asian markets but have minimal overlap with European and US markets. Sydney is typically 10-11 hours ahead of London and 14-16 hours ahead of New York, meaning the ASX closes before these major markets open.

After-Hours Trading

Unlike some international exchanges, the ASX does not offer extended after-hours trading sessions. All trading must occur during the official market hours. However, institutional participants can negotiate off-market transfers outside these hours, though these must be reported to the ASX.
