✓ Pros
Zero rejected orders across our automated EA run
Free low-latency VPS for active accounts
Australian-founded with strong ASIC oversight
Fastest withdrawal we processed: 1 business day
✗ Cons
EUR/USD spread marginally wider than IC Markets
A$200 minimum on Razor account
VPS requires minimum monthly trade volume to stay free

KolaTrading Verdict: Pepperstone is the broker we’d trust most for automated MT4 trading. During our 72-hour EA run on the Razor account, not a single order was rejected, and the 0.14 pip average EUR/USD spread held steady across all three sessions.

One observation worth flagging: during the US Non-Farm Payrolls release on 1 May, EUR/USD widened to around 3.8 pips for roughly 80 seconds. That’s normal ECN behaviour during major news, but EA users should account for it in their risk settings.

Ideal for EA and algo traders who prioritise order fill reliability. Less suitable if you need the absolute tightest spread — IC Markets edges it there.

✓ Pros
Lowest minimum deposit among ECN MT4 brokers tested
Fastest raw execution we recorded: 29ms

ASIC-regulated since 2005
✗ Cons
No free VPS on standard accounts
MT4 add-on suite smaller than FxPro’s
Support response slower than IC Markets in our test

KolaTrading Verdict: FP Markets delivers the best value MT4 setup for traders starting with a smaller balance. The A$100 minimum is the lowest among the ECN brokers we tested, and the 29ms average execution was the fastest raw figure we recorded.

The 0.12 pip average EUR/USD spread sits between IC Markets and Pepperstone. If you want raw ECN pricing on MT4 without a A$200 entry point, this is the pick.

Best for cost-conscious traders who want genuine ECN execution on MT4. See the full breakdown in our IC Markets vs FP Markets comparison.

Most extensive MT4 plugin and add-on suite

✗ Cons
No ASIC AFSL — no Australian client protection
No access to AFCA dispute resolution
Wider standard spreads than ASIC ECN brokers tested

KolaTrading Verdict: FxPro has the deepest MT4 add-on ecosystem of any broker we tested, which is why traders who rely on niche plugins still gravitate to it. The standard-account EUR/USD averaged 0.45 pips in our run — wider than the ASIC ECN brokers above.

⚠ Regulation warning: FxPro does not hold an ASIC Australian Financial Services Licence. Australian clients trading with FxPro do not benefit from segregated-fund rules under Australian law or access to AFCA dispute resolution. We include it for MT4 platform completeness only — for local protection, choose one of the three ASIC-regulated brokers above.

How We Actually Tested These MT4 Brokers

Most broker review sites describe a methodology in abstract terms. Below is the actual process we used for our Q2 2026 MT4 testing round, including what we found that surprised us.

The Setup

Between 3 March and 30 May 2026, we deposited A$500 into live accounts at four brokers and installed the MetaTrader 4 terminal on each. Every account was funded via bank transfer or card — the same methods a retail trader would use. We did not accept demo credits or sponsored accounts.

What We Traded

We placed a minimum of 30 live trades per broker on MT4 across EUR/USD, AUD/USD and XAU/USD gold. Trades were entered at three times: 10:00–11:00 AEDT (ASX open), 17:00–18:00 AEDT (London overlap) and 23:00–00:00 AEDT (US session peak), so we could compare spread behaviour across sessions.

The EA Test

To assess automated-trading reliability, we ran an identical moving-average crossover EA on each MT4 terminal for 72 continuous hours. We logged rejected orders, requotes and disconnections — the metrics that actually matter to algo traders.

What We Recorded

For every trade we logged the quoted spread at entry, the fill price versus mid-price (real slippage), and the time from order submission to execution confirmation. We also processed one full withdrawal cycle per broker to measure time and fees.

A Finding Worth Flagging

Pepperstone’s Razor account completed our 72-hour EA run with zero rejected orders — the only broker to do so. IC Markets had two requotes during the Non-Farm Payrolls window, but the tightest spreads overall. There is a genuine trade-off here between absolute spread and fill reliability.

What is MetaTrader 4 (MT4)?

MetaTrader 4 is the most widely used trading platform for forex and CFDs. Released in 2005, it became the industry standard for retail trading because of its charting tools, custom indicators and support for Expert Advisors — automated trading programs written in the MQL4 language.

In Australia, most ASIC-regulated brokers still offer MT4 alongside newer platforms. Its popularity comes down to the enormous ecosystem of EAs, indicators and scripts built up over nearly two decades.

Why Do Traders Still Choose MT4 Over MT5?

  • Larger EA library — Most automated strategies are still coded in MQL4
  • Simplicity — A lighter interface that many discretionary traders prefer
  • Familiarity — Years of muscle memory for long-term users
  • Broad support — Almost every broker offers it

If you’re weighing the two platforms, our MT4 vs MT5 guide breaks down the differences in detail.

Can You Run Expert Advisors on MT4?

Yes. EA support is the single biggest reason MT4 remains popular. An EA can open, manage and close trades automatically based on rules you define. All four brokers on this page permit EAs, and IC Markets and Pepperstone offer free VPS hosting to keep your EA running with minimal latency.

Is MT4 Trading Legal in Australia?

Yes. MT4 is just a platform — what matters is the broker behind it. As long as your MT4 broker holds a valid ASIC AFSL, you have segregated client funds, negative balance protection and access to AFCA. Always verify the licence at the ASIC Connect register before depositing.

How to Choose an MT4 Broker in Australia

1. Confirm ASIC Regulation First

Only trade with a broker that holds a valid AFSL. This ensures segregated client funds, negative balance protection and access to AFCA for disputes. Of the brokers on this page, IC Markets, Pepperstone and FP Markets are ASIC-regulated; FxPro is not. Verify any licence directly at the ASIC Connect register before depositing.

2. Check the Raw Spread and Commission Together

A tight raw spread means little if the commission is high. Our testing recorded IC Markets at 0.10 pips plus A$3/side and FP Markets at 0.12 pips plus A$3/side — both excellent. Always add the commission to the spread to get your true cost per trade.

3. Prioritise Execution if You Run EAs

For automated trading, fill reliability matters more than a fraction of a pip. Pepperstone completed our 72-hour EA run with zero rejected orders. If you trade algorithmically, weight execution and free VPS access heavily in your decision.

4. Understand the Full Cost Structure

  • Spread — The difference between buy and sell price; your primary recurring cost
  • Commission — Raw/ECN accounts charge a per-side commission on top of the spread
  • Overnight swap — Charged on positions held past market close
  • VPS fees — Free at IC Markets and Pepperstone for qualifying balances; otherwise a monthly cost

5. Know ASIC’s Leverage Limits

ASIC caps CFD leverage for Australian retail traders: major forex 30:1, minor forex and gold 20:1, major indices 20:1, other commodities 10:1, individual shares 5:1, crypto 2:1. These limits apply regardless of which platform you trade on, including MT4.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MetaTrader 4 still worth using in 2026?

Yes. MT4 remains the most widely supported platform for Expert Advisors and custom indicators. While MT5 is newer and adds more asset classes, the MT4 EA ecosystem is larger and most automated strategies are still coded in MQL4. For pure forex and CFD trading with EAs, MT4 is still an excellent choice.

Which MT4 broker has the lowest spreads in Australia?

In our Q2 2026 live testing, IC Markets Raw recorded a 0.10 pip average EUR/USD spread on MT4 — the tightest in our test group — followed by FP Markets at 0.12 pips and Pepperstone at 0.14 pips. Remember to add the per-side commission to compare true cost.

Are all the MT4 brokers in this list ASIC regulated?

IC Markets (AFSL 335692), Pepperstone (AFSL 414530) and FP Markets (AFSL 286354) all hold a valid ASIC AFSL. FxPro is included for MT4 platform completeness but is regulated by the FCA, not ASIC, so Australian clients do not receive local protection or AFCA access. We recommend an ASIC-regulated broker for Australian residents.

Can I run Expert Advisors on MT4 with these brokers?

Yes. All brokers listed permit automated trading and EAs on MT4. IC Markets and Pepperstone also offer free VPS hosting for qualifying account balances, which reduces EA latency and keeps your strategy running even when your own computer is off.

Do I need a VPS to trade with an EA on MT4?

Not strictly, but a VPS is strongly recommended for serious EA use. It keeps your terminal running 24/5 with a stable connection and low latency to the broker’s servers. IC Markets and Pepperstone provide free VPS for active accounts; otherwise expect to pay a monthly fee to a third-party provider.
