📋 KolaTrading Verdict — April 2026
Bottom Line
IG Markets is Australia’s most established trading platform. It offers the widest instrument range (18,000+), the best research tools, and the highest level of regulatory credibility of any broker we review. It is not the cheapest for active CFD traders — Pepperstone and IC Markets both have tighter raw spreads. But for investors who want one platform for everything — shares, CFDs, forex and research — IG is hard to beat. The only genuine weakness our testing found is customer support during peak market hours.
📢 Big 2026 Change: IG removed its custody fee in January 2026 and introduced zero-commission trading on US and UK shares. This makes IG significantly more competitive for share investors than in previous years.
✓ What We Like
18,000+ markets — the widest range of any broker we review
Zero commission on US and AU shares — major improvement in 2026
Best research: Reuters, Autochartist, DailyFX, in-house analysts
FTSE 100 listed — highest corporate transparency of any retail broker
Weekend trading on major indices and some FX pairs — unique
Spot crypto coming in H2 2026 (post-Independent Reserve acquisition)
✗ What We Don’t Like
CFD spreads not the tightest — 0.86 pips EUR/USD vs 0.08 at IC Markets
No CHESS sponsorship — ASX shares held custodially via Citibank
Support wait times consistently poor during peak market hours
0.7% FX fee on international shares — notable for frequent overseas investors
Ongoing Australian class action regarding CFD marketing practices
No MT5 or cTrader — limits appeal for advanced platform users
Detailed Scores
Markets & Research 5.0
18,000+ markets. Reuters news. Autochartist signals. DailyFX. In-house analysts. No other broker we review comes close on research depth.
Regulation & Safety 5.0
FTSE 100 listed. ASIC + 6 other tier-1 licences. 52-year track record. One minor flag: ongoing AU class action. Does not affect safety assessment.
Spreads & Fees 4.3
0.86 pip EUR/USD recorded — competitive but not ECN-tight. Zero-commission shares is a strong 2026 improvement. 0.7% FX fee is the main cost watch-out.
Trading Platforms 4.8
Proprietary IG Platform is genuinely excellent. MT4, TradingView and L2 Dealer also available. No MT5 or cTrader is the only gap.
Customer Support 3.8
Our test queries answered promptly. But independent reviews consistently report queue times of 650–1,000+ during peak periods. A genuine weakness.
Education & Research 5.0
IG Academy, DailyFX, webinars, Trade of the Week, Reuters feed. The most comprehensive educational offering of any broker we review.
💰 Spreads & Fees — 2026

IG uses a spread-only model for most CFDs — no commission on top. That makes the spread the only cost you pay per trade. It’s simpler to understand than ECN brokers, but the spreads are wider.

For share investing, 2026 changed the picture significantly. Zero-commission US and UK shares, and the custody fee removed entirely, make IG genuinely competitive for buy-and-hold investors.

How Does IG Compare on Cost?

For active CFD and forex traders, IG is not the cheapest. Our recorded EUR/USD average was 0.86 pips — versus 0.08 pips at IC Markets cTrader and 0.09 pips at Pepperstone Razor. On a 1-lot round-turn, that’s roughly A$15 at IG versus A$7–8 at ECN brokers. The gap is real.

For share investors, the picture flipped in 2026. Zero-commission US shares and no custody fee make IG a genuinely competitive option — particularly against CommSec (A$9.95/trade) and Stake (A$3/trade but no research tools).

The AUS 200 is where IG stands out for index CFD traders. Our recorded average was 0.58 pts — the tightest AUS 200 spread we measured across all brokers in our Q1 2026 test. If you primarily trade Australian index CFDs, IG’s spread disadvantage on forex narrows considerably.
🖥 Trading Platforms

IG offers four platforms: the proprietary IG Platform, MT4, TradingView and L2 Dealer. That covers most trader types. The main gap: no MT5 and no cTrader.

IG Proprietary Platform — The Standout

IG’s web platform is the best we have used across all brokers reviewed. It runs in your browser — no download. Clean layout, multiple workspaces, one-click trading from charts.

What makes it genuinely different is the information built in. Reuters news feed, Autochartist signals, an economic calendar and the DailyFX research portal — all available without switching tabs. The mobile app mirrors the desktop closely. It won Best Mobile Share Trading App at the 2026 Finder Awards.

MetaTrader 4 (MT4)

MT4 is available for forex and CFD traders who rely on Expert Advisors. VPS hosting is available for algo traders needing 24/7 uptime. Performance connects to the same liquidity as the IG platform — execution quality is consistent across both.

Note: IG does not support MT5 or cTrader. If you need either platform, Pepperstone or IC Markets are better suited.

TradingView Integration

You can execute live IG trades directly from TradingView charts — no need to switch between platforms. Available for both CFD and share accounts. This combination of TradingView’s charting with IG’s market access is genuinely useful for chart-first traders.

L2 Dealer — Professional DMA

L2 Dealer gives eligible clients Direct Market Access with full Level II order books. You see market depth and deal directly onto exchange order books. It is not available to all retail clients by default — request access via IG’s account team.

ProRealTime — Advanced Charting

ProRealTime is integrated into the IG Platform for automated strategy testing and backtesting. A monthly fee applies for real-time data, but it is waived if you meet a minimum monthly trade count. For systematic traders, it is a worthwhile add-on.

Both accounts can be held simultaneously under one login. IG Pro account available for professional clients — lower margins but without retail Corporations Act protections. SMSF and corporate accounts also available. Free demo available on CFD account.

🏦 Deposits & Withdrawals

No fees on deposits or withdrawals. In our testing, a card deposit was instant and an AUD bank transfer withdrawal arrived within 2 business days. The main thing to note is the A$150 minimum withdrawal via bank transfer — higher than Pepperstone (A$1) and IC Markets (A$50).

💬 What Real Users Say

We analysed independent reviews from ProductReview.com.au, Trustpilot and trading forums. The pattern is consistent: platform and tools earn high praise, customer support during peak hours earns consistent criticism.

✓ What Users Praise
“Platform itself is excellent and of a very high standard” — multiple long-term users, ProductReview
“Professional tools and market analysis resources are significantly helpful” — 10-year IG user
“Great integration of tools and news — the app and web version are really intuitive” — verified user
Won Best Share Trading Platform and Best Mobile Share Trading App at 2026 Finder Awards
✗ Common Complaints
“Chat queue 650 to 1058 in the queue, ring them and you are on hold for 2 hours” — ProductReview 2025
“Australian account managers appear to have been replaced with offshore call centre workers” — forum
“Platform glitch — they agreed it was a system error, they didn’t refund any of my money” — verified
Multiple reports of delayed support during high-volatility periods — exactly when it matters most
KolaTrading assessment on support: These complaints are too consistent across independent sources to dismiss. Our own test queries during business hours were answered promptly. But if you are an active trader who may need urgent help during a news event or a platform issue, IG’s support track record during peak periods is a genuine risk. Factor this in before opening an account.
🔒 Is IG Markets Safe?

IG Markets is one of the safest retail brokers in the world. It is publicly listed on the London Stock Exchange and was promoted to the FTSE 100 in March 2026. That means quarterly earnings reports, audited accounts and regulatory scrutiny that no private broker faces. It has operated continuously since 1974 — 52 years without a major regulatory breach.

AU Class Action
⚠ Ongoing

IG holds ASIC licence AFSL 220440 — verify on the ASIC Connect register. Client funds are held in segregated accounts at Citibank, separate from IG’s operational capital.

The ongoing Australian class action relates to CFD marketing practices — not fund misappropriation. ASIC’s 2023 remediation exercise involved multiple brokers industry-wide. IG remains fully licensed and operational. We disclose it for transparency, but it does not change our safety assessment.

CHESS note for share investors: IG uses a custodial model via Citibank for share holdings. You do not receive a HIN. You retain beneficial ownership and receive dividends normally — but your shares are not directly registered on the ASX sub-register in your name. If CHESS is important to you, use CommSec, Stake or Superhero instead.
